Children's Day Celebrations in Guatemala.
These are the photos of children enjoying the Children's Day Celebration at the Panajachel Pre-school.

At the three Mayan Families pre-schools, the children celebrated Children's Day with chuchitos, which is a food for special days....it is soft corn mixture with a piece of chicken or other meat in sauce inside the mixture. This is then wrapped in corn leaves and boiled. They are very delicious.
The children also had jello and horchata...a rice drink.
In Panajachel, the teacher, Luki, dressed up as a clown and played games with the children. They played "pass the parcel", do the "hokey pokey" and had a dancing competition
It was a lot of fun.
In Tierra Linda,the children at the pre-school joined all the children and families at the Tierra Linda school for a lunch, that Mayan Families, the school and families had contributed towards. We also distributed toothbrushes that had been donated.
In San Jorge la Laguna, the children had chuchitos, horchata and jello. The teacher, Clara played games with them, the Mayan Families staff took photos to show to the children, they all love that!
At each pre-school, the children received a bag of food, 10lbs of corn, 5lbs of beans, a bag of incaparina ( which is a very healthy, fortified cereal) and a bag of oatmeal.
Other years we have given pinatas, candy and had a clown but this year with the seriousness of the food shortage we decided that food was the best gift.Please go to this link to see some of the children receiving food at the Pana pre-school.

This past week we gave out corns and beans to 250 families in San Jorge La Laguna.
Today we are going to Santiago and giving out more corns and beans to nearly 200 families.
We wish that we could give out a lot more and we know the need is very great.
We want to thank everyone who has been so kind to send in donations of money to enable us to feed people.
This situation is going to get worse unfortunately, before it gets better. In the meantime , there are going to be a lot of hungry children.
If you can possibly afford to donate $25 US a month to sponsor a child for food , it will make a big difference in their lives. We will select a child for you and you will have a photo of the child who is receiving your food every month. $25 US is not enough to feed a child for a whole month but it will really help this child to have something to eat.

WAKELAND ELEMENTARY COLLECTING DONATIONS TO HELP FAMILIES IN GUATEMALA
Students and staff at Wakeland Elementary School are collecting donations of backpacks, school supplies, clothes and toys to send to Guatemala for Christmas. The donations are headed up by Wakeland’s Climate Committee and being sent to Guatemala through a charity project called “Mayan Families.” Donations to the project do not have to be brand new, but they do need to be clean and in good shape. The deadline for donations is October 16, 2009. Guatemala is a country where nearly 70 percent of the population of 12 million can’t read and where children rarely have the chance to attend school, have enough food or access to clean water. For more information on Mayan Families, you can visit www.mayanfamilies.org. Each Wakeland student that donates an item will be given a special friendship bracelet. For more information, contact Jessica Spence at 741-3358, ext. 2059.

Malnutrition in Guatemala.
This is another article about hunger and malnutrition in Guatemala. While this focuses on Jalapa, it is not only that area that is suffering. My fear is that this crisis will become more so and help will be greatly needed in the months to come. I hope people will not become immune to the needs of the people in Guatemala. They really are in need of help.
