Youth running for the Lake!

Youth running for the Lake
This past weekend Mayan Families was pleased to assist with several parts of the first ever International Marathon in the communities around Lake Atitlan.
On Saturday, the 26th of May, nine of our Tierra Linda Basico students and two from Panajachel participated in the first annual Atitlan International half Marathon. The half marathon was 21km (13.1 miles) starting  from the center of Panajachel, passing through Santa Catarina and on to San Antonio before returning to finish in Panajachel.
We are grateful for the generous donations that allowed us to inscribe and equip these 9 runners with clothing, shoes and provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch following this international event.
All of our students showed real spirit and drive, placing in the top 50 runners.  This was really amazing because none of them trained for the event!  The results can be seen at http://atitlanmarathon.com/.
On Sunday May 27th Mayan Families also hosted a 3.5 km (2 mile) Family Fun Run and some short running events for the younger crowd.  These were non-competitive but affirmed our support for families and well being in the local community.
The entire weekend was a first for Panajachel as a non-profit, fundraising event. Proceeds will go to targeted environmental projects to protect the Lake from a range of contamination threats.
You can see photos of the youth runners, the weekend events and many more photos about the work of Mayan Familes on Picasa at https://picasaweb.google.com/110451788994899868894/FirstPanajachelMarathonHalfFullMay26272012#
Thanks for your support.
