Sara Queme.

Some members of Mayan Families Canada went to visit one of their sponsored families.
Sara Queme is a single mother and she has a physically and mentally disabled daughter.
Her daughter was not born with this disability. When she was 6 months old, she had pnuemonia. Sara took her to the local hospital, they put the baby on oxygen but somehow no-one noticed when the oxygen was finished. The baby suffered brain damage as a result of lack of oxygen.

Sara has cared for her daughter, Ixtaban alone now for 27yrs . It is very difficult for Sara to work and leave her daughter home alone. Ixtaban uses diapers and this is very difficult for Sara. Sara has a hernia from lifting her daughter to change her. Sara also had an accident and broke both her arms many years ago. This has left her with a lot of weakness in her forearms. She washes all of the clothing by using her feet. She does not have enough strength to use her arms.

We give Sara disposable diapers whenever we can for her daughter. She was so happy when Corey from Mayan Families Canada brought her several packs of disposable diapers. They are very expensive here and quite often Sara does not have enough money for food, so she cannot afford to buy diapers.

Sara is an indigenous woman but she has not been able to afford to wear traditional clothing for a very long time now. She wears second hand clothing.

Sara lost the house she was living in and all her possessions in Hurrican Stan in 2005. Since that time Mayan Families has helped her with a low cost home to live in, we have provided her with medical care for her herself and her daughter and helped her with food as much as possible. This year, Sara and her daughter were lucky enough to receive a new house supplied by the government. This house is a little ways outside of Panajachel and is a new community made up of people who lost their homes in the hurricane.

Sara's house is very close to the new school ( which is just tin sheeting) . Sara would love to have a refrigerator so that she can sell cold drinks and snacks to the children as they leave school.
We would love to help Sara with this project and give her a chance to make an income. This refrigerator would cost approx. $400 US.
If you would like to help Sara, please contact us.
