Yesterday morning, 7 of our staff members got up very early, around 4.30a.m. , packed up the pick ups with food and toys, stopped on the way in San Lucas Tolliman and bought 70 whole chickens to give out to families in Panabaj and Chuk Muk.
This is the community that was devastated in 2005 by Hurricane Stan. They lost more than 800 people buried under the mudslides.
Many of the families that we now help are families who lost husbands, mothers, children and grandparents. Many of the grandparents are now raising the children who have been left without parents. In some cases, it is older children raising young siblings.
They were all very grateful to receive these baskets of food and chickens.
