Jose Carlos ....still battling infections.

11yr old Jose Carlos is one of our sponsored students who has had a really tough 12 month period.
He was burned terribly by hot oil in his home. His family could not afford medical care and he suffered without pain killers overnight. Even after he received medical care the family could not afford to maintain it.

When we met Jose, he had an awful infection....we have been treating him since then....finally this month, the infections were gone and there was a US.. group of plastic surgeons who came with Helps International. They were able to cut the terrible scar tissue that was making it very uncomfortable for Jose Carlos. He was not able to move his arm much.

In one week they operated on him three times.
Mayan Families staff member, Eddy spent the time at the hospital with him because his mother could not speak Spanish.

We were thrilled at how well Jose Carlos did with the medical treatment. But we were apprehensive about him going home to conditions that are not so hygenic.

Today are fears were unfortunately, proven right. He has developed another infection. We brought him from his village in Santiago and sent him for medical treatment. He has to come back in 7 days to see how he is doing.

We asked the mother whether he could stay with us in Panajachel so we could make sure that his wounds are looked after but she did not want him to stay. Jose Carlos is not living at home right now, he is staying with his grandparents, because his father is very abusive and has been hitting Jose. His mother was worried for him and has taken him to stay with the grandparents.

We need help for Jose Carlos to be able to continue his medical treatment and also pay the fares back and forth for Jose and his family to come from Santiago to Panajachel.
We also gave Jose Carlos food to take home ....there is never enough to eat at his home and he needs a lot of vitamins and nutrients right now. We hope when he comes back next week that he is doing much better.
