New Traditional outfits.
This family was so thrilled to not only have the pleasure of meeting their sponsor but also to have new traditional clothes purchased for them!
The mother's clothes were very old and the girls could not afford to have traditional clothing.....they were so surprised and delighted when their sponsor, John , gave them this wonderful gift each.
Traditional clothing is expensive and for most families that we work with they have to make the decision to have food on the table and buy used western clothing....the western clothing is much cheaper. It is not because they want to wear it, they are proud of their customs and their traditions but mostly, they just cannot afford it.
The tradition of wearing "traje" also gives work to weavers, both foot loom weavers and back strap weavers. Traditional clothing keeps the customs and the traditions of Guatemala alive.....apart from that they are just so beautiful!
