Sara and her disabled daughter live on very little. Sara cannot leave her daughter alone for very long periods. She is a single mother, her daughter became disabled when she was 6 months old. She had pnuemonia and was on oxygen in the hospital. Unfortunately, nobody noticed when the oxygen ran out and she was left brain damaged.
Since then Sara has struggled to support her daughter. Her daughter wears cloth diapers and Sara has to do a lot of washing by hand. Sara broke both her wrists many years ago and has very little strength in her hands. She washes all her clothes and cloth diapers with her feet.
Sara also has a hernia from lifting her daughter but has been unable to get medical treatment for it because she is unable to leave her daughter alone so that she can be operated.
Sara lost all her possessions in Hurricane Stan in 2005. This year she moved into a house that the government had provided for families who lost their homes in Panajachel. It is a new settlement which is about 15 mins by car from Panajachel. It is difficult for Sara to get to town so today we delivered the food to her home.
Sara is very grateful for this help.
