These are some of the students who were fortunate enough to receive the gift of traditional clothing that they needed for the upcoming celebrations and parades. The outfit is black corte, ( long skirt) white guipil ( blouse) and black shoes. Thank you for everyone who was able to help their sponsored students....we know this was a big ask at this time, and we are happy for the students who are able to have these outfits. Of course, we are sad for the ones who are unable to have it but we have realized that we can only do , what we can do. We don't always agree with the school system but we have no other option but to try and help the students as best we can.
This outfit will be worn Wednesday at the parades in Solola and then afterwards for graduation ceremonies and school activities. After that this outfit will be worn as day clothing and will last a very long time. Traditional clothing is expensive and that is why so many young girls cannot afford to wear it. We see that encouraging girls to wear their traditional clothing promotes pride in their culture. It also provides work for the weavers who otherwise will lose their skill. These outfits are worn with sandals.
