Karina celebrated her 7th birthday this week.
Karina is an orphan, her mother passed away in 2004 during Hurricane Stan. The family had lost their home in the flood, they had moved into an emergency shelter and the mother had a heart attack and died.
The aunt took all the children to live with her including the new born baby. This was very difficult for the aunt, she had four children of her own and she is a single mother, they do not own their own home, they rent. It has been difficult for the aunt to keep everyone fed and clothed but she does her best. The children sell beaded jewelry on the streets.
Karina was very happy to receive this wonderful gift of food and a birthday cake to share with the family. It is the first birthday cake she has ever had!

Hi David, Mayan Families unfortunately, does not have enough funds to be able to have a food budget for families in need. All of the families that receive food do so because a sponsor is sending food to them, you do not have to be the school sponsor to send food to a family, you can choose to sponsor any family with food.
